We Are HidDenmark

Our name is a contraction of “Hidden Denmark” and our main purpose and focus is to shed light on hidden and forgotten places and stories from around Denmark.

Hiddenmark is both a community of people with different — but often overlapping — areas of interest, as well as a formal association, founded in 2022. The association works mainly from a cultural dissemination and preservation perspective, and has a special eye for where something is in danger of being lost to posterity. In many ways, we see our work as a continuation of the proud Danish folk legend tradition.

The Denmark of Legends

Denmark has one of the world’s largest collections of folk legends. These are fantastic and often eerie tales that differ from fairy tales and myths by being place-bound and often linked to a historical person.

The legends themselves should perhaps be taken with a grain of salt. In addition to the supernatural elements, they are often contradictory, or almost identical to a legend in the neighboring parish. Whether or not there really were goblins and trolls, the stories have been told over and over again — and they have been reality for those who believed in them.

In addition to the more traditional legends, we also deal with Danish UFO cases, cryptozoology, and other Fortean topics. You can even trace elements from the aforementioned legend tradition in these more modern experiences, but what they mean and what truths they each offer, we leave up to the individual to assess.

The site and the map

In addition to writing articles, a large part of our dissemination takes place through social media, especially Facebook and Instagram, where we write posts and show photos from places we have visited, or stories we have found through our research.

Another more central communication tool is our interactive map, where we continuously plot locations as we photograph and describe them. With the map, you can get a better geographical overview of Denmark’s many legendary trees, giant stones, holy springs, haunted houses and much more, all taken from a wide range of written and oral sources and supported by personal visits. We also give you tips on how to plan your own adventures to these amazing places and the opportunity to delve deeper into the stories behind them.

HidDenmark and you

You too can contribute to Hiddenmark! Maybe you have an exciting story or know of a locality from your region that you would like to bring to a wider audience.
